Baby Purple Martins

Earlier this summer (July 14th),  I peeked into the purple martins homes. There were babies at all different ages. I have to admit that some were fairly ugly.

They are so vulnerable at this young age. You can see that some of these nests have mud barriers by the doors to help protect them from natural predators.

The house below was full with 3 or 4 birds. The feathers were filled in and looking good.  But at this point I was unable to tell of they were male or female.

Another full house that was nearby had babies that were just a few days younger.  No wonder why the parents were so busy.
