Silk Painting

A group of women from work got together Sunday afternoon for silk painting.  I brought two simple coloring books from home with for them to choose simple designs for their first 11" square silk painting using resist.

Over and over again, I reminded them that it did not need to be perfect that the process of setting the dyes would change what they would see. In fact, I encouraged them to leave "character lines" within the colors.  They did.  And almost to their disappointment those lines washed out as we did the chemical color set.

We had one silk off to the side that we used to practice putting resist on the fabric and test the colors.  At the end of the day, I added more colors to the silk with no particular intent and finished it off.

We used the new frames for the first time and they worked wonderfully.  The biggest challenge were the clips were connected to the silk.  They needed to be removed for painting that section and reconnected afterwards.  The biggest challenge of the day was fighting the wind.  Only one small container of paint tipped over.  The wind caught it and tossed it.  That was why we worked outside (in case of oopsies).
