| The Peirce Mansion |
Built in 1891 by John Peirce with exterior walls made of South Dakota quartzite that will withstand any natural storm. Inside were 21 rooms. When the economy it tumultuous times, John Peirce was one of many business men that filed bankruptcy.

Peirce staged a national raffle selling tickets at $1.00 a piece. Nearly 40,000 tickets were sold and the winner that was "announced" was a millionaire New York thread maker William Barbour. Later, they found out that the title had transferred 19 days before the drawing.

It is amazing to see some of the old photos that they have from when Peirce owned the house. Interesting to see how they had it decorated back in the original days. Notice that the lights were designed in the shape of a star in the entryway.

J. Earle Martin family from 1928-46 lived in the house and did some renovation including changing the ceiling, the lighting and carpeting over the hardwood floors. a majority of the woodwork was left original.

As in any aristocratic family of the day, they had a music parlor. Although it is not recorded, it was common for young ladies to be expected to sit at the piano-forte and entertain the family and friends that stop by.

The wall at the edge was taken down over the years making it a wide open room. It is now rented out and used for weddings and other important events.
