Like I said my class is very diversified. There is one Hindu, one Buddhist (both non-practicing) and a large number of non-practicing Christians. Discussions about religion get very weird.
On the news they talked about the discovery of water/ice on an unexpected planet. We got talking about how the technology is so advanced that they can look through telescopes and understand the make up of what they are seeing. Ironically it was a Hindu that mentioned that they have found heaven. Because there is a planet made of diamonds and a planet made of beer. Do you need anything more to make up Heaven?
There is an actual planet made of diamonds. But that is not one of the gems that makes up the Heavenly gates or adorning the heavenly walls. Those are (all pure) jasper, sapphire, chalcedony, emerald, sardonyx, carnelian, chrysolite, beryl, topaz, chrysoprase, jacynth, amethyst.
The planet made of beer is a mythical planet that comic book characters are searching for and never seem to find. It is a planet that does not stay in one place. Which of course brought up the absurd topic of "it must be heaven if there is a randomly moving planet made of beer.
What is heaven? Revelation 21 describes the purity of heaven. "Nothing impure will enter." That would doom all of us but for the grace of God. It is this time of year, Christmas time, that we need to not only celebrate the birth of Christ but acknowledge that he is the greatest gift that would could ever receive.
Have you ever been given a gift that you have walked away from? There are a few rare times that you hear about people not accepting a gift. God's gift, amazingly, is one of them. It is so simple yet so complex. If you recognize that Jesus is God's son and that his death and resurrection is the gift of grace that will take away our sins and through his blood we will be made pure. All you need to do is confess that to God, Thank him for it and begin a relationship with him.
If you haven't accepted and opened that gift, I would recommend doing so. It is the most amazing gift you could ever receive.
